Breeyn McCarney Premieres FW10 Collection at The Courthouse
by Barb on March 19, 2010
Walking along Yonge street and texting on my BlackBerry, I was confused when I looked at the address of my destination. I could’ve sworn that the courthouse was closer to city hall, than it was to the numerous banks and financial institutions. So imagine the look of confusion that could be easily read on my face when was asked to present an ID; eventually, I figured it out – the building had been a courthouse but was now just a local hangout named The Courthouse close to Adelaide and Yonge.
Following the NADA 3D presentation at the Scotiabank Theatre, the notably titled “Rogue Fashion Week” continued with the inaugural runway presentation of Breeyn McCarney’s line. Inspired by the Murakami novel Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and the idea of finding beauty in destruction, the unveiled line revealed a thoughtful and intimate collection.
Evoking the sense of destroyed beauty, McCarney’s styling expert Mariko Lauren added her own touches with her own designed flower rings and hairpieces to show off a tumbling with nature. The incorporation of rabbit fur affirmed that Toronto is definitely embracing the trends seen in New York, who called for a return to fur. McCarney’s approach towards using fur, though, is far more elaborate and detailed with a rabbit fur star sweater and shoulder tops matched with knitted mohair jumpers.
The nuances in the pieces are charming. Taking apart vintage jewelry, McCarney offers a certain element of one-of-a-kind to parts of her collection. As well, the choices to make leaf appliqués from leather, as opposed to cotton, and to hand paint foliage onto white cotton offer a unique design aesthetic and an extraction of her fine arts background. The beauty of newcomer McCarney’s collection comes across clearly with her careful thought process and meticulous execution.

Wool plaid jacket; distressed cotton skirt

White cotton dress with hand-painted flowers and leather lace detail

Beaded dress; bodice of silk, skirt of distressed cotton, 15oz of black seed beads - absolutely love the detail!

Cable knit print cotton/bamboo jersey dress - excellent combination, close fitting because of the bamboo, but still some structure because of cotton

Rabbit fur star sweater, hand knit from 100% wool - told you fur is back in!
